Tanzania 2019

Tanzania Photo Exploration 2019

Sept. 8–18, 2019

Wild Tanzania!

Come along with professional travel photographer and tour leader, Wayde Carroll, for an incredible 11 day / 10 night photo exploration of Tanzania. Abundant wildlife, three national parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an experience with one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes on Earth—this tour is a photographer’s dream!

On this exploration we’ll be taking numerous game drives and our small group will be traveling in private seven-passenger Land Cruiser’s. The nice thing is we will limit the number of guests to three to five per vehicle so that each person will have plenty of room to capture the action no matter which side it’s happening. Each vehicle will be driven by highly experienced wildlife guides who know how to get us to the right spots for unique images and who understand the photographer’s desire to wait and anticipate the best action and lighting. Wayde will be along so that each member of our small group will receive plenty of hands on instruction and guidance throughout our journey.
In Tanzania, we’ll have plenty of daylight to capture a wide variety of locations at our own pace. We will be lodging in three star lodges and upscale tent camps with en suite restrooms, real beds, hot water, and electricity. At night we’ll review photos and talk about techniques to practice the following day.

We will most likely have incredible opportunities to photograph numerous animals and bird species including lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, baboons, hyenas, flamingos, ostrich, hippos, gazelles, dik-diks, buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, topis, impalas, secretery birds, cinnamon crested bee-eaters, and much more! The landscapes are stunning and I’ve seen the most glorious sunsets there as well.

We have a number of multi-night stays in one location, so if you just want to take a break and spend some time relaxing in the beautiful settings, you have that option as well!

Some planned highlights will be: wildlife, wildlife!, wildlife!!, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, and a visit with the Hadzabe Tribe Near Lake Eyasi. Prepare to take more photos than you ever have before

Today the real adventure begins! After breakfast we’ll board our private safari vehicle(s) and make our way to Tarangire National Park. There is a good chance we’ll start seeing wildlife on the way in to the lodge. We’ll check in to our luxury tents before enjoying lunch and heading out for our first game drive. Our lovely tents are more like hotel rooms with canvas walls. Each one has en suite bathrooms with solar heated showers and a comfortable veranda. The park is stunning with much different vegetation and landscapes than the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The chance for numerous elephants, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, and unique birdlife is high. The baobab trees add striking elements to our photos here. We’ll return to our lodge at dusk and spend some time looking at our images to make sure all is going well and we’ll go over various techniques to help everyone get the best images possible in the days ahead.

This morning we’ll have an incredible opportunity to spend time with members of one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes on the planet, the Hadza. With less than 2,000 members still in existence, this tribe stays true to much of their traditional ways. We will meet a small group in the early morning and have the chance to accompany the men on a hunt or you can opt to stay in camp and photograph the women and children performing their daily tasks. We will have a local translator along to help us communicate. This is one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had! Dinner tonight back at our lodge.

This morning we’ll head to the spectacular Serengeti National Park. On the way we’ll stop at the Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites of early human occupation. Just the mention of the Serengeti makes me think of wildlife at its wildest. I’m instantly thrown back to all of the National Geographic and Wild Kingdom specials on TV when I was a boy. It’s truly special to be on safari in the Serengeti. It’s like you imagine, even better. We’ll spend the next few days living like explorers based at our upscale mobile tent camp in the heart of the park. (Yes, even these “tents” have en suite toilets, large beds, a heated bucket shower, and solar electricity.) We’ll seek out the Big Five (lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and Cape buffalo) as well as giraffes, wildebeests, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, Thomson’s gazelles, antelopes, hyenas, a variety of birds, and more! At night we’ll review photos and relax by the campfire, listening to the sounds of wildlife in the night.

After breakfast we’ll take our sack lunches and head toward our final destination, the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater. The volcanic crater is the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world and is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s known as one of the last undisturbed wildlife ecosystems. Over 25,000 wild animals and 500 bird species call the crater home. It has one of the highest densities of lion prides anywhere and is our best place to find the black rhino. We’ll spend two days exploring this unique area and we’ll be lodging in an upscale converted colonial-era coffee farm. Here you can walk the coffee plantation and gardens or get a massage. Once again we’ll have a pool for those so inclined!
